Meet Phil

When Phil was first referred to Enrich by his care coordinator, he was feeling isolated and struggling to meet new people. “I wasn’t having many friends,” he shared. But after nearly six months of attending, things have changed. “It’s allowed me to think about myself as my old self again, rather than just being ill.”

For Phil, the biggest impact of Enrich has been the connections he’s made. Socialising again has been a key part of his recovery, helping him feel less alone and more like himself. “It’s been really important,” he says.

Phil has loved trying new activities, especially mindfulness, cooking, and exercise. While he already enjoyed mindful walking, he struggled with sitting still and practicing mindfulness on his own. But having a guided session at Enrich has helped him a lot.

He’s also enjoyed the cooking sessions with Wiggly Community Kitchen, where he’s learned to make healthier meals and reduce processed foods. “I used to eat ready meals every day,” he admits. “Now, I only have them twice a week, and I eat a lot more vegetables and fish.” While crisps are still a weakness, he’s started swapping them out for healthier snacks like cranberries.

Beyond that, physical exercise has played a big role in his journey. He’s recently taken up aqua fit, which has not only helped his fitness but also boosted his confidence in talking to new people.

When Phil first started, he was a bit nervous and even wished he had joined earlier. “I would have appreciated doing it sooner,” he reflects. But now, he looks forward to it every week. “My friends know I come to Cheltenham on Tuesdays—they always ask what I’ve been up to.”

Having a structured weekly routine has given him focus, something he says is essential for his mental health. “It helps take away intrusive thoughts and keeps me from feeling isolated.”

Phil has made huge progress in just a few months, from improving his diet to rebuilding his confidence. And when asked if he’d like to keep coming next year? “I would love to come back.”

“The people here have been so friendly, open, and supportive. That’s made all the difference.”
